Poststreptococcal Glomerulonephritis

Abstract
Forty-seven children with sporadic post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, confirmed by clinical and laboratory studies, were followed prospectively for three or more years. The group included patients representing the entire spectrum of clinical disease, from mild asymptomatic to severe classic forms. Differences in the rate of healing were predicted on the basis of age and renal morphology at the onset of the illness. Pre-school-age children had an excellent prognosis. For older children, initial renal morphology provided the most reliable indicator of ultimate outcome. A poor prognosis was not always presaged by persistence of proteinuria for two years or longer, and conversion to an orthostatic pattern of proteinuria was regularly associated with a desirable outcome.
