Structural and dynamic properties of the C60/n-pentane inclusion compound: solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance investigations

Abstract
Variable-temperature solid-state 13C NMR studies of the C60/n-pentane inclusion compound are reported, aimed towards understanding the structural and dynamic consequences of a low-temperature phase transition in this material. The phase transition occurs over a wide temperature range, between ca. 210 and 173 K. In the hightemperature phase, the two ends of the n-pentane molecule exchange rapidly (on the 13C NMR timescale) between two crystallographically inequivalent end-group environments, whereas, in the low-temperature phase, this exchange process does not occur (on the 13C NMR timescale).
