Abstract
An approximate formula for the , phase shift is derived. Assuming that the nucleon is a bound state, this formula depends only on the pion and nucleon masses, and the coupling constant (). No purely phenomenological parameters are involved. The formula is roughly consistent with experiment in the 0- to 220-MeV range.
