The presence of starch and alpha-amylase in the leaves of plants

Abstract
A survey for alpha-amylase activity in 79 species of plants selected from 30 families indicated that the enzyme was present in the leaves of every species. Starch was also present in the leaves of most species; where it was apparently not present it could be induced, in all but two species, by floating leaves on sucrose in light. An association between starch and alpha-amylase activity in leaves of plants is indicated.
