Some Factors Affecting the Growth of Streptococcus Bovis on Chemically Defined Media

Abstract
It was demonstrated that a substance produced by autoclaving glucose with phosphate is required for growth of Streptococcus bovis on NH4Cl, but not on L-glutamine as a sole N source. This product of autoclaving was replaced by potential electron acceptors, i.e., acetaldehyde, acetoin, and pyruvate or by lowering the initial pH of the medium below 7.0. The effects of anaerobiosis and the medium used to grow inocula on the growth of S. bovis in chemically defined media have been dicussed. The amounts of NH4Cl and L-glutamine required for growth have been compared in the presence and absence of L-glutamic acid. No synergistic growth response to combinations of a good N source, i.e., L-glutamine or NH4Cl and L-glutamic acid, a poor N source, was observed.
