Cortical Cerebellar Atrophy without Ataxia

Abstract
The authors state that parenchymatous crotical cerebellar degeneration may be a primary disorder or it may be secondary to degeneration elsewhere in the nervous system. The degeneration may affect only one type of cell exclusively or predominantly, such as the granule cell or the Purkinje cell, or it may affect all types. Parenchymatous cortical cerebellar degeneration is a histopathologic state and not a disease entity. The pathogenesis is unknown and many factors may play a role in its causation. The disorder may be asympto-matic and discovered accidentally at necropsy.
