A Study of Genetic Transformation in Gloeocapsa alpicola

Abstract
DNA for transformation studies was successfully isolated using lysozyme, sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium aminosalicylate for cell lysis followed by purification. Preliminary evidence of a transformation system in G. alpicola is presented and intergeneric transfer of antibiotic-resistant markers from Anacystis nidulans to G. alpicola and vice versa is demonstrated. Data suggested that both DNA and RNA are necessary for transformation but that DNA is the major contributor.
