Vibrational Spectrum and Infra-red Polarization Measurements for Malononitrile

Abstract
The infra‐red spectra of gaseous, liquid, and solid malononitrile have been obtained using a spectrometer equipped with LiF, NaCl, and KBr prisms. Polarization measurements on a linearly oriented preparation of solid malononitrile using a transmission polarizer were of material assistance in the classification of absorption bands into their respective species. These data, together with the Raman data in the literature and a normal coordinate treatment, permitted a complete assignment of the fifteen fundamental frequencies and a determination of the force constants and thermodynamic functions for the molecule.
