Abstract
Streptomycin exerted a marked inhibitory effect on growth of Saccharomyces fragilis (ATCC No. 2360) in chemically defined media containing beta-alanine or this amino acid plus pantoyl lactone. In contrast, no effect on growth was obtained when streptomycin was incorporated into media containing preformed pantothenic acid. The data are interpreted to suggest that streptomycin may inhibit the coupling of beta-alanine and pantoyl lactone to form pantothenic acid. Keywords
