Abstract
Inner-shell excitation of carbon has been studied by electron impact spectroscopy at a resolution of 70 meV. CO and CH4 were used as the target gases and the excitation energies of the inner shell hole states have been accurately determined by calibrating against the (2s2p)1P0 autoionizing state in He. Vibrational structure of the states has been clearly resolved and the spacings obtained. The widths of the states have also been found enabling their lifetimes to be deduced. Keywords
