Abstract
120 red foxes (Vulpes fulva), were trapped tagged and released in New York State. Forty returns from these efforts combined with data from state trappers were used in studying their distr. and movements. Foxes were found to demonstrate a seasonal population shift. From Apr. until Oct., foxes remained in the vicinity of their dens, which were in sandy soils. A high degree of intra-specific tolerance and gregarious-ness was observed then. Two litters often inhabited the same den. Also, offspring of single litters often mingled with unrelated offspring of separate dens. Communal behavior and large concns. of litters were observed. Female foxes apparently establish the home range of a family and seldom range more than a few miles from home territory. From Oct. to Mar. male foxes, however, wander widely.
