The Scolytidae and Platypodidae (Coleoptera) of Penang, Malaysia

Abstract
A checklist is given of 109 species of Scolytidae and 25 species of Platypodidae from the island of Penang. The distribution of each species is given, and notes on its biology where possible. Numerous new host records are included. The species are classified into six faunal elements : Eastern Palaearctic (1 species), Indian (3 species), Malaysian (55 species), Indomalaysian (33 species), Circumtropical (21 species) and Endemic (21 species). Taxonomic, zoogeographical and biological comparisons are made with the faunas of the mainland of Malaya and of neighbouring countries. The following new species are described by F.G. Browne : Cryphalomorphus striatulus, Hypothenemus artocarpi, Poecilips campnospermae, Poecilips marginatus, Poecilips petioli, Ptilopodius praeda, Sphaerotrypes brevisetosus, Xyleborus beaveri, Xyleborus pruinpsulus (Scolytidae) and Platypus macer, Platypus truncatellus (Platypodidae). Seven more species are recorded for the first time from West Malaysia.
