Intravenous Infusions of Concentrated Combined Fat Emulsions into Human Subjects.

Abstract
Two types of combined fat emulsions, containing 15% and 20% fat were infused into 25 human subjects. The emulsions were composed of solns. of 10% protein hydrolysate (Amigen), 50% glucose, 6% intraven. gelatin and refined coconut oils. Intraven. gelatin was used as the emulsifying agent requiring between 2 and 3% for thorough emulsification of the 15 and 20% concns. of fatty oil. Infusion was given intraven. at specific rates ranging from 20 to 80 drops/min., with a total of 500 ml. of the emulsion which supplied 860-1050 calories. Constitutional reactions, such as high temps. or chills, averaged 27% of which about half were due to the speed of administering the emulsion. A variety of laboratory and clinical observations made in conjunction with these infusions were described.
