Metabolic Effect of Serotonin in the Rat.

Abstract
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) depressed the rate of O2 consumption of the albino rat when injd. intraperit. at dose levels as low as 1 mg./kg. A similar effect was observed with tryptamine and histamine (both of which are structurally related to serotonin) at much higher levels. This effect was not observed in the rabbit, guinea pig, or dog.
