Abstract
The work, of which the results are described in the following pages, was carried out in the Department of Zoology of the University of Sheffield and at the Laboratory of the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth. I wish to thank the British Association and the University of Sheffield for the use of tables at the Plymouth Laboratory, and I would also express my gratitude to Dr C. M.
