Quadrupole Moment of the Lowest Rotational Band in Even Calcium Nuclei

Abstract
The static electric quadrupole moment of the 21+ state in Ca42 was measured to be (18.9±8.1)e fm2. A B(E2;21+01+)=(81.5±3.0)e2 fm4 was obtained. The E2 properties of the lowest seven levels were used to decompose the levels into (fp)2 states plus a deformed band with β2=+0.375±0.006. The band structure, moments of inertia, and β2 values in Ca42 and Ca40 are nearly identical, implying that the lowest K=0+ band in Ca40 is also prolate.
