THE DETECTION OF DREAMING IN A CONGENITALLY BLIND SUBJECT

Abstract
The dreams of a congenitally blind male S were coincident with Stage 1 EEG, but not with REMs [rapid eye movements]. Since S reported no visual imagery in the manifest content of his dreams, and no dream activity which he followed with his eyes, the finding is interpreted as supporting the hypothesis that while Stage 1 EEG is a physiological concomitant of dreaming, REMs only reflect visual activity in the manifest content of dreams.
