Abstract

The Lewis acid catalyzed cyclization of olefinic aldehydes has now found frequent use in natural products synthesis. The literature examples, although all the formation of ortho-fused rings, fall into two distinct classes based on the nature of the fused six-center cyclic transition state: meta (A) or ortho (B).
