Negative ion reactions with neutral ozone

Abstract

Charge transfer reactions between ${\mathrm{O}}^{-},{\mathrm{O}}_2^{-},{\mathrm{OH}}^{-}$ , and ${\mathrm{NO}}_2^{-}$ and O₃ have been studied to obtain cross sections for information of ${\mathrm{O}}_3^{-}$ The charge transfer reaction ${\mathrm{O}}_3^{-}$ on NO₂ has also been remeasured. The range of ion energies considered extends from 1 to 500 eV. Upper limits have been obtained for the charge transfer cross section of F⁻, Cl⁻, and ${\mathrm{CO}}_3^{-}$ , with O₃. The results show that the electron affinity of O₃ must be close to accepted value of approximately 2 eV. The method used to produce a neutral beam of pure O₃ is discussed.
