Soviet Investigations in the Field of the Vascular Supply of the Brain

Abstract

Problems of the blood supply of the human brain have been the object of investigation by Russian scientists since the middle of the 19th century. Studies in this field have been conducted by V. Krauze (1855), N. I. Skokovskii (1856), V. Dybkovskii (1863), P. N. Ovsiannikov (1873), I. Navalikhin (1874), V. Danilevskii (1874), O. A. Chegotta (1876), P. Novitskii (1880), A. M. Tikhomirov (1880), N. Vasil'ev (1884), N. Tsybul'skii (1885), S. Istamanov (1888), I. E. Shavlonskii (1891), and many others. In the present review we shall concentrate principally on the studies made by Soviet investigators within the last 20 years. As basis for the physiology of the circulation of the blood in the brain, its alterations during pathological states and applications in neurological and neurosurgical practice, investigations of the anatomical structure of the vascular system both on the surface and within the brain substance are of great significance.
