Encephalitis associated with herpes simplex infection presenting as a temporal‐lobe mass

Abstract
Two patients who survived acute encephalitis with focal neurological manifestations have been presented. Radio-graphic demonstration of a right temporal-lobe mass was followed by craniotomy and brain biopsy in both cases. In the first case, herpes simplex was isolated from temporal-lobe tissue and intranuclear inclusions were identified in the same tissue. The complement-fixing antibody titer to herpes simplex rose significantly during the illness in each. One patients has returned to his former occupation, and the other is still receiving rehabilitative measures.
