Abstract
In this paper, we attempt to correlate the observed electronic spectrum of crystalline naphthalene with the observed spectrum of the free molecule. The normal Frenkel exciton theory is extended to include ion‐pair states and the effect of these on the spectrum is taken into account. It is found that the observed spectrum can be accounted for in the present analysis, if the ion‐pair state is energetically close to the first excited singlet state of naphthalene. Keywords
