Census of Blue Grouse with Recorded Calls of a Female

Abstract
Territorial male blue grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) were censused by their response to the playback of recorded precopulatory calls of a hen. The method is fast, accurate, and makes males easy to detect and observe. The response to the call appears to be the same throughout the day. Recorded calls should be useful alone, or with conventional search, in detecting, censusing, observing, and capturing male and female blue grouse.
