Abstract
The optical conductivity of nickel has been measured on a single crystal, using different orientation of the magnetization vector. Weak structures in the region 2–2.6 eV on the low‐temperature spectrum are assigned to the direct interband transitionsX 5→X 4′ and L 31→EF in the majority‐spins band. A value of the spin‐orbit parameter is deduced (ζ=0.12±0.01 eV), leading to exchange splittings ΔEd =0.55±0.07 eV and ΔE sp ≲0.1 eV .
