Gas Chromatographic Determination of Small Amounts of 2-Naphthylamine in 1-Naphthylamine by Means of Derivative Formation

Abstract
2-Naphthylamine can be quantitatively determined in commercial 1-naphthylamine by the gas chromatographic separation of either the N-naphthylacetamides or the N,N-dimethylnaphthylamines. Acetylation of the primary amines is effected directly on the GLC column by consecutive injection of amine and acetic anhydride. The N,N-dimethylnaphthylamines are synthesized by the external reaction with dimethyl sulfate. As little as 0.02% 2-napthylamine can be detected by the above methods.
