Reappraisal of the South African Urban Hierarchy

Abstract

In this paper the preliminary urban hierarchy of South Africa (1960) stated in the 1967 issue of hte Journal is re-examined and compared with a final service hierarchy determined by the application of more detailed methods suggested by Berry and Garrison (1958). The findings show that a high degree of correlation exists between the hierarchy based upon index methods and that determmed by the more rigorous methods.
