Sodium and Potassium Exchanges Associated With Nor-Epinephrine Infusions

Abstract
Intravenous infusion of nor-epinephrine (1-7 mg/kg) into 11 dogs for periods of 20-50 minutes resulted in marked elevation of the blood pressure, fall of plasma Na concentration, rise in plasma K level without significant changes in chloride concentrations. In contrast to previous investigations on the effect of adrenergic drugs on plasma electrolytes it is emphasized that massive infusions of nor-epinephrine can produce marked reversible shifts of Na from plasma to some unknown compartment. The close correlation between blood pressure changes and Na shifts suggests the participation of the cardiovascular system in the uptake of Na.
