THE INFLUENCE OF VITAMIN B 12 ON OXIDATION BY A MUTANT STRAIN OF ESCHERICHIA COLI

Abstract
Vitamin B12 increased markedly the rate of oxidation of a variety of substrates by resting cell suspensions of a mutant strain of E. coli that requires methionine or vitamin B12 for growth. The total oxygen uptake was not increased. The effect of vitamin B12 on acetate oxidation was investigated in detail, and a possible relationship of the vitamin to porphyrin synthesis was studied.
