Abstract
The well-known perturbation theory for weakly guiding couplers of the polished kind is compared with exact numerical results, and found to be highly accurate, even when the cores touch. An investigation is made into the form birefringence of this type of coupler and various properties of its normal modes, including the fraction of modal power propagating within the cores. Keywords
