Biology and Control of the Seed-Corn Maggot on Beans in New York

Abstract
Five dusts were applied to soil before planting with red kidney beans to control Hylemyia cilicrura. By using 66 lbs. per acre of benzene hexachloride (3% gamma and 25% other isomers) on May 27 the percentage of injured plants was reduced to 8 from 19 in the untreated check and on Au''g. 10 the percentage was reduced to 14.8 from 49.1 in the check. By using 5% chlordane 80 lbs./acre the percentage of injured plants was 8 and 28.1 as a result of the May and Aug. applications, respectively. However, the benezene hexachloride reduced the percentage of injured plants to only 14.5 from 18.7 in the check when planting was delayed 4 weeks. Both insecticdes imparted a flavor to dried beans but the chlordane flavor was not detected consistently. Adults of the maggot will mate and oviposit in the laboratory cage descr. if the buckwheat honey solution used as a food is supplemented with moistened fish meal or chopped earthworms.
