Abstract
Using the Thomas-Fermi model of the atom, we calculate the damping of collective oscillations due to the excitation of bound electrons to free states. We find that in some cases the decay time is much longer than the period of the oscillation. Our results indicate that weakly damped plasma oscillations can exist in atoms. Keywords
