TWO LIGHT REACTIONS OF BACTERIOCHLOROPHYLL IN VIVO

Abstract
Photo-synthetic bacteria exhibit 2 kinds of reversible light-induced absorption spectrum changes near the infrared absorption maximum of bacterio-chlorophyll. One of these reactions which reflects the oxidation of P870 (a specialized bacteriochlorophyll component) is accompanied by spectral changes that correspond to reduction of ubiquinone. The other infrared light reaction which accompanies cytochrome oxidation may correspond to the reduction of bacteriochlorophyll.
