Crystalline Changes in Avian Bone Related to the Reproductive Cycle

Abstract
It was shown by X-ray diffraction measurements that pigeon cortical bone apatite is more crystalline than medullary bone apatite. In addition, the bone mineral turnover connected with egg formation apparently utilizes the smaller or less crystalline medullary bone apatite crystals 1st, leaving behind the larger crystals. This corroborates past work that has shown less crystalline bone apatite to be more metabolically active.
