Abstract
The application of the Ling hot‐film anemometer to measurements of free liquid turbulence has been studied. Probe drift due to electrolysis and scale formation, which heretofore has been a troublesome problem, was eliminated by maintaining the water resistivity above 106 Ω/cc. Mean velocity distributions, intensities and scales of turbulence, and spectral energy distributions were obtained which were in good agreement with corresponding measurements due to Corrsin in an air jet. On the other hand, turbulent intensity measurements in air were low by a factor of two to three, possibly due to insufficient compensation for the heat conducted into the glass backing. Keywords
