Postoperative Coagulation Defects

Abstract

There are many causes of abnormal bleeding during operations. The most common situation is one in which bleeding commences due to a surgical accident, intravascular coagulation or an undiagnosed previous defect. The situation is compounded by administration of excessive amounts of stored blood, perhaps with large amounts of dextran. The most useful single therapeutic measure is replacement of the lost blood with fresh blood.
