The Hierarchy of Modes of Radiation Death in Specifically Protected Mice

Abstract

There are several modes of dying from acute radiation effects, and there are several methods of reducing or preventing radiation damage. Some protective procedures are highly specific in that they affect a particular radiation syndrome much more than all the others. Authors have studied acute radiation effects in mice when any or all of 3 common causes of death (marrow intestinal and oral syndrome) were blocked by specific shielding. The main result was the manifestation of very considerable recuperative faculties which are normally masked by the death of the animal.
