Abstract
A basis for rational distinction of algal communities is being gradually worked out through the accumulation of extensive data regarding both micro- and macro-communities. A primary broad classification of these associations is suggested: A. attached communities, permanent and temporary, subdivided into (1) epiphytic on either (a) inorganic or (b) organic substrata; and (2) bottom forms varying with light, sediment, and depth of water. B. Floating macro-communities of bottom and epiphytic genesis. C. Loose-lying communities of bottoms, both littoral and profound, playing a role in the gradual accumulation of sediment. D. Plankton, both littoral and pelagic. 175 references to recent literature are given.
