Magnetic focusing of a relativistic electron beam: theory

Abstract
Computer‐simulation techniques have been used to study the interaction of a relativistic electron beam and a mirror magnetic field. A charge‐neutralized steady‐state model with self‐consistent magnetic fields was used to simulate the drift‐tube region. Comparisons are made between experimental results, adiabatic calculations, and the computer simulation for the electron distribution at the peak of the mirror field. The dependence of these results on the mirror ratio and beam‐entrance conditions is presented.
