Abstract
Elastic and inelastic scattering of 17-MeV (center-of-mass energy) protons by , , , , and was studied using scintillation crystal spectroscopy. Angular distributions were obtained for most of the levels observed. All the angular distributions are characteristic of a direct interaction with initial-and final-state interactions. The differential cross sections were summed to obtain total cross sections which were compared to transition rates when known. For the larger () cross sections a strong correlation with the transition rates was found. This correlation is discussed in some detail.
