Adequate surveyed control should be established for mapping and other areal measurements, to reduce field effort while improving accuracy [ecological research]. Carefully planned triangulation will minimize laborious distance measurements. A simple device, to permit 1 man efficiently to use a long steel tape, is illustrated and its use explained. Techniques for marking long lines and study areas are described. Coordinate systems to designate locality are recommended and discussed.
