Abstract
RECENTLY, several general hospitals have enlarged or opened, or are considering opening, psychiatric wards. An important objective has been to return responsibility for treatment of hospitalized mental patients to the home community. The advantages of treating such patients in general hospitals are many: the stigma of "a mental hospital" is avoided; the patient is hospitalized near his family; general hospitalization makes coverage by existing insurance plans more feasible; the problem of getting first-rate medical personnel to work in isolated, low-prestige hospital settings is avoided; both research facilities and routine medical care are more easily accessible; and the patient is placed . . .Keywords
