Prophylaxis of Rheumatic Fever

Abstract

Both published and unpublished data bearing on the question as to how long prophylaxis should be maintained are discussed. Data concerning the effect of penicillin therapy of streptococcal infections on the incidence of valvular heart disease are summarized. It is concluded that prophylaxis is probably effective in preventing heart disease and should be continued for life.
