Effect of Cigarette Smoking on Gastric Secretions of Patients with Duodenal Ulcer

Abstract
MANY clinical opinions on the effect of smoking on gastric secretions have been expressed, but a careful review of the literature fails to reveal any studies sufficiently detailed or adequately controlled to substantiate such opinions scientifically.Haag1 believed that the effects of smoking on the gastrointestinal tract were variable, depending on which of the autonomie ganglionic systems was more stimulated.Gray2 reported that 50 of 63 patients with duodenal ulcer showed an increase in the volume of gastric secretion after smoking, and a fourth of the patients showed a concomitant rise of gastric acidity.
