Mechanism of Alcoholic Stimulation of Gastric Secretion.

Abstract
Perfusion of dilute alcohol solution through isolated fundic (Heidenhain) gastric pouches in dogs usually failed to elicit secretion of acid gastric juice. In an animal prepared with isolated antrum, Heidenhain pouch, and gastric fistula perfusion of antrum with 5% or 10% alcohol caused profuse secretion from Heidenhain pouch. Alcohol introduced via gastric fistula caused a lesser stimulation, and apparently resulted from the intestinal phase. It is concluded that the gastric secretory response to ingested alcohol is largely the result of activation of gastric and intestinal phases of gastric secretion.
