Transverse momenta of hadronically produced heavy-quark systems: 2→3 processes in quantum chromodynamics

Abstract
Transverse-momentum spectra are calculated for heavy quarkonium states QQ¯ (Jψ,ϒ) produced in pp and p¯p collisions. These transverse momenta result from the hard quark (q) and gluon (g) subprocesses qq¯QQ¯g, gqQQ¯q, and ggQQ¯g. The pT distributions for Jψ production are expected to be significantly steeper than for the μ+μ continuum, whereas the two distributions become similar in the ϒ mass region. These effects are partly confirmed by recent CERN ISR measurements. Predictions for p¯p collisions at s=540 GeV are also given.
