FURTHER PURIFICATION OF THE GROWTH HORMONE OF THE ANTERIOR PITUITARY1

Abstract

A modified alkaline extraction method for prep. of growth hormone from beef ant. pituitaries was described. Cysteine treatment of this prep. led to a purification resulting in an increase in growth promoting activity, together with a marked decrease of thyrotrophic, lactogenic and gonadotrophic hormone contamination. The growth promoting effects of pituitary extracts cannot be attributed to any one of the above mentioned "target organ" hormones or to a synergistic action between any of these.
