The prosthetic group of cytochrome oxidase. 1. Purification as porphyrin a and conversion into haemin a

Abstract
A method of purifying porphyrin a of high spectroscopic purity and approximately 85% absolute purity from ox heart is described and the method given for its conversion into haemin a. During the conversion of haemin a or other formyl haemins into their respective porphyrins, special treatment of the acetic acid solvent is often necessary to prevent oxidation of the formyl group to carboxyl.
