The effectiveness of size cues to relative distance as a function of lateral visual separation.

Abstract
Using 2 different amounts of lateral separation, it was found that the average apparent depth between 2 differently sized familiar objects (playing cards) increased as the lateral separation of these 2 objects was increased. This happened both when the 2 cards were viewed binocularly and when 1 card was viewed binocularly and the other monocularly. Equivalent changes did not occur when both cards were the same size. It is concluded that, under the conditions of this study, the effectiveness of size cues to relative depth increased as the lateral separation of the differently sized cards was increased.
