Abstract
Surgical Management of Crohn's ColitisCROHN'S disease is not necessarily limited to the small bowel, as previously believed, but may also involve the colon.1 Colonic lesions may be present with ileal involvement, or the colon may be the only site. Disease of the colon and rectum presents special problems to the surgeon because of the propensity for recurrence, the frequent unavailability of distal gut for a satisfactory anastomosis, or the presence of perineal sepsis. At the University of Chicago Medical Center guidelines for the surgical treatment of Crohn's colitis have been based on our experience and that reported by others. . . .
