Beat radiation from dipoles near a photonic band edge

Abstract
We consider a model for two nearly identical, slightly detuned dipoles that radiate in frequency near a photonic band edge such that one dipole is in the band while the other is in the gap. The dipole in the gap does not radiate directly, but its presence can be detected by beats that occur in the power output of the dipole that is in the band. Hence it is possible to detect properties of and perhaps to excite gap dipoles if they are coupled by local modes to dipoles that are located in the frequency band.
